My life has always had a decidedly feminist twang. My parents met as dropouts in DUSA whilst dressed as witches. A few months after this dignified encounter, my mother proposed to my father. She went to work whilst he stayed at home as a househusband. Growing up, the world liked to remind me how unusual this arrangement was; the word “househusband” would bemuse others at school; my mother would be accused of being neglectful for working; I liked playing with dolls and this was apparently weird. One time my mother discovered she was getting paid significantly less than her male peers. She threatened her employers and got a massive pay rise (that was a good Christmas). My childhood was awesome, from playing video games with my mother to my dad’s fabulous cooking. I would like to play a role in helping shatter societal gender roles so that children can enjoy a similarly great childhood to me minus the nonsense.
My job involves generating ideas, lobbying, developlng the website and ensuring smooth running of events.
Hi guys! I’m Fiona (or Fee), a 2nd year medical student and one of the societies Presidents. I first became a feminist after reading a DH Lawrence short story (there’s weirder reasons, I suppose). I stayed one because until we as a society start treating women’s issues as serious and stop sidelining them as ‘unimportant’, we aren’t going to progress as a society either.
I’m charge of ensuring a smooth line of communication between society members and the committee, and ensure the welfare of society members of all members, so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or problems. I also organise the more informal social events of the society, so let me know if you have any ideas!"
About the Society
The Dundee University Feminist Society was set up in 2012 by former President Naomi Bridges and Vice-President Ana Hine, to provide a platform for the discussion of feminist issues and to help campaign for equal rights for self-identifying women, girls and trans-feminine people in the Dundee area and beyond. The society grew very quickly, winning DUSA’s most active society of the year in 2012-13.
We currently have over two hundred members on the facebook group, and are open to any matriculated student or graduate. Events include regular social gatherings, debates, political lobbying, film screenings, guest speakers, self-defence classes, street harassment awareness days, bake sales, zine production, collaborations with other societies and more.

I’m Avi, I’m from Fife and a 4th year medical student. I’m a feminist because equal rights for women should be common sense, not controversial. I applied for Intersectionality Officer because equality applies to everyone, regardless of your background (and also because one of my all-time least favourite questions is “Yeah, but where are you REALLY from?”)
I’m interested in feminism worldwide and I’d like to see a future where being simultaneously female and an ethnic minority doesn’t mean drawing the short straw. My role involves helping to make sure the society and our events are inclusive - please get in touch if you have any questions or ideas!
